Scott Free is rushed to the emergency room after he slits his wrists in an attempt to escape the final trap: Death. While in recovery, Scott is visited by Orion, who proceeds to “teach” Scott by repeatedly punching him in the face. Once Big Barda rebuffs Orion, Scott notices that Barda’s eyes are brown opposed to their normal shade of blue (to which she ignores). Scott visits a talk show hosted by G. Gordon Godfrey who asks Scott about his motives in “escaping death” and if he truly succeeded in performing the “stunt”, to which Scott confusingly responds with “What?”. After the interview, Scott converses with Highfather, who alerts Scott of the conflict brewing on New Genesis after Darkseid’s apparent success in acquiring Anti-Life Equation.

Scott’s perception of reality is implied to be somewhat tainted, as the phrase “Darkseid Is” begins to flood his mind and people seem to be warped or distorted. Aspects of the DC Universe seem to be altered such as the New Gods physical appearances, Barda’s eye color, Darkseid still being in power on Apokolips, and Scott and Barda still being together after the events of Darkseid War. A bizarre joke about a student drawing “the true face of god” is mentioned by Scott and then Oberon, who is revealed to be dead by Barda after Scott states that he had a conversation with him.

Scott finally receives a message on his Mother Box from Orion, who notifies him of Highfather’s death and the mobilization of the New Genesis troops. As Scott and Barda enter a Boom Tube, Scott expresses his awareness that something is wrong with reality and that he can’t escape this. Barda proceeds to smack him and tells him to stand (reminiscent of Orion’s treatment earlier) and they “enter the next trap”.
