The following contains major spoilers for “The Once and Future Knight” from the pages of Phases of the Moon Knight #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s new Moon Knight is officially done with Marc Spector’s Midnight Mission, but that doesn’t mean he is finished with his own.

Writer Erica Schultz and artist Manuel García’s story “The Once and Future Knight” (from the pages of Phases of the Moon Knight #1) finds Max Coleridge preparing to finally confront Marc Spector after the latter’s recent return from the dead. Before the doors of the Midnight Mission can be opened for him, however, Coleridge has already disappeared into the shadows. As it turns out, the former Shroud has decided that he would rather make a name for himself on his own, all in the hopes of proving himself to the one person who wants nothing to do with him.

Introduced all the way back in 1976’s Super-Villain Team-Up #5 by Steve Englehart and Herb Trimpe, Max Coleridge grew up in a loving and affluent family, at least up until all that was ripped away from him by a horrifying act of violence. With his parents murdered before his very eyes, Max was struck with a sense of grief that ultimately inspired him to use his inherited wealth to combat such evils. To that end, Max studied criminology, martial arts, and anything else he felt would be beneficial in his impending crusade against crime.

Max eventually encountered the Cult of Kali, who helped to imbue him with mystically enhanced senses in exchange for his human sight. Coleridge also developed the ability to call upon and command Darkforce energies, which helped give rise to his mantle as the Shroud. Over the years that followed, Coleridge played the role of a villain when necessary to further his endeavors as a hero, and even helped Moon Knight, Tigra, and others during a short-lived stint fighting alongside the West Coast Avengers.

When Moon Knight sacrificed his life to save thousands if not millions of New Yorkers from a devastating attack, Coleridge took the opportunity to step into his shoes as a new, overtly violent Moon Knight. This put Coleridge in direct conflict with the heroes of the Midnight Mission, who were genuinely attempting to carry Marc’s legacy on into the future. Soon enough, Coleridge was unmasked by his former allies turned bitter enemies, which only helped to sate his fractured, murderous intentions for a short while.
