The following contains major spoilers for X-Men #3, on sale August 28 from Marvel Comics.
Magneto has finally found a new protégé as the X-Men rise up From the Ashes of the Krakoan Era.
While the other members of the eponymous team of X-Men #3 are busy exploring the mystery of their latest recruit while also navigating small town politics, Magneto has taken it upon himself to keep watch from high above the frozen wilderness. Unsurprisingly, Magneto isn’t alone, though he certainly wasn’t expecting Temper to be the one to join him. As it turns out, the two have more in common than just their status as mutants, and Temper’s ice-cold demeanor coupled with her violent past might just make her the perfect pick for Magneto’s next protégé.

Idie Okonkwo, better known as Temper, made her Marvel Comics debut in the pages of 2010’s Uncanny X-Men #528 by writer Matt Fraction and artist Whilce Portacio. As a young teen, Idie’s powers activated without warning in the middle of Oyo City, a startling development at the time. As one of the first five mutants whose powers emerged following M-Day and the Decimation, Idie was of key importance for all of mutantkind. She also came under fire from an anti-mutant paramilitary group, who were fended off by Storm.
Beyond Idie’s importance as one of the Five Lights, she was the crux of Marvel’s X-Men: Schism event back in 2011. During an encounter with the then-recently reformed Hellfire Club, Idie was caught in the crossfire. While Wolverine hoped that she would heed his warnings and lay low until the heat died down, Cyclops pressured her to use her powers to end the threat there and then. Temper ultimately decided to follow the latter’s instructions, incinerating numerous Hellfire Club agents and leading to a deep rift between Cyclops and Wolverine over what the X-Men’s true mission should be in regard to treating children as cold-blooded soldiers.

The current X-Men run is just one of nearly a dozen new titles all tying into Marvel’s From the Ashes event. Following the end of the Krakoan Era, multiple X-Teams have cropped up in their own team-up titles, including X-Factor by Mark Russell and Bob Quinn, Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez, X-Force by Geoffrey Thorne and Marcus To, and NYX by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Francesco Mortarino. All the while, individual characters such as Jean Grey have found a home for themselves in self-titled series such as Phoenix from writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Alessandro Miracolo, plus upcoming titles such as Wolverine, Dazzler, and Mystique.
