The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Society #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s Spider-Society has just met their match in the form of a Multiversal army of their worst enemies.

After another ordinary day spent patrolling the streets of New York City in Spider-Society #1, Miles Morales and the Gwen Stacy known best as Spider-Gwen make their way to a meeting with the series’ eponymous society of interdimensional heroes. While they are largely happy to catch up with one another after so many months away, the individual members of the Spider-Society know that something is clearly not right with this meeting. As it turns out, their most key members are nowhere to be seen, and the Sinister Squadron absolutely have something to do with that.

First seen in 2001’s Amazing Spider-Man #30 by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr., the original Spider Society was founded in 1099 AD by a group of knights and warriors who dedicated themselves to safeguarding and preserving the mystical energies of Spider-Totems all across the world and beyond. In the centuries since their founding, the Spider Society has grown in numbers, though they haven’t become any less secretive about their endeavors.

Since then, the Spider Society of old has evolved into a high-tech conglomerate that acts as the front for the group’s true mission. It has also splintered off into a second Spider-Society, one comprised of the very Spider-Totems that the original Spider Society was founded to protect. Currently, the Spider-Society watched over by the likes of Madame Web and Miguel O’Hara consists of dozens of various Spider-Totems from across the Multiverse, many of whom, like the extralethal Weapon VIII, are just as frightening as the villains they face on a regular basis.

The Sinister Six is the oldest supervillain team to terrorize Spider-Man, with the original lineup formed by Doctor Octopus having made their debut back in 1964’s Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. In its first incarnation, the Sinister Six consisted of Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and the Vulture. Since the first version of the team, over a dozen more have risen to take its place, with villains from every era of Spider-Man’s comic book career lending their abilities to whatever nefarious plot the Sinister Six have in store.

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
