Wizard of Oz Characters Teased for a Bloody Showdown in New I Hate Fairyland Arc

Image Comics‘ bestselling series I Hate Fairyland returns for a new blood-drenched five-part story arc beginning with issue #16. I Hate Fairyland’s creative team includes Eisner Award-winning writer Skottie Young and artist Brett Bean.
The solicit for the ‘all out’ showdown teases the return of Gert’s biggest enemy to Fairyland, while also giving fans an idea of what classic fairy tale characters they can expect to see in the new “Happy Ending” arc — including some iconic characters from The Wizard of Oz. “The showdown begins when Gert’s biggest foe returns to Fairyland… and brings with them a legion of enemies ready for battle. Gert must sharpen her ax and prepare for the fight of her life and for the survival of Fairyland itself. But first, she needs to make a quick stop in Kansas to ask for a little help from someone that’s quite familiar with fighting against evil in far-away fantasy lands.” I Hate Fairyland #16 goes on sale Oct. 2.

Image Comics has previewed the cover art that will kick off the new story arc in I Hate Fairyland #16. Four covers featuring art by Young will be available, including an ‘uncensored’ version of the main cover featuring dripping blood and another featuring the series’ protagonist, Gert, being held up in a comedic scene mimicking a memorable scene from Disney’s The Lion King and saying: “Finally drew me as a baby, huh? What a fluffin’ sellout.”
The “Happy End Game” arc of I Hate Fairyland arrives as the series nears its tenth anniversary, and Young spoke about how Gert will return to face her enemies from over the past decade. “I Hate Fairyland is my favorite thing to work on, month in month out,” said Young. “We’re getting close to the 10-year anniversary of Gert being in our lives and I thought it would be a great time to make her come face to face with all the poor souls she’s sent to the afterlife over the last decade.”

I Hate Fairyland #1 was originally published in October 2015 and was described as an Adventure Time / Alice in Wonderland-style epic mixing the violent elements of Tank Girl and Deadpool with the cute, charming aspects of fairy tales. The series was revived in 2022, with a now adult Gert living in the real world and down on her luck, realizing that the only job she’s qualified for is back in Fairyland — the place she hates the most.
I Hate Fairyland #16 will be available in comic book stores on Oct. 2 from Image Comics.
