The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Woman #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Jessica Drew is finally uncovering the secrets behind the West Coast’s newest super team, and they are even worse than she could have imagined.

Spider-Woman #9 brings readers to San Francisco where, in the middle of the night, the titular hero is awakened by the sound of someone breaking into her apartment. Rather than any malevolent force, however, the intruder turns out to be none other than Liberty, the star-spangled hero of The Assembly. Unfortunately, The Assembly isn’t just an ordinary team of superpowered youngsters, but rather unwitting victims of Hydra’s latest scheme who fell into their clutches much like Spider-Woman’s own son.

The young heroes of The Assembly first appeared in Spider-Woman #7. Consisting of Liberty, Hellrune, Cadet Marvel, Moon Squire, and the hulking Titan, The Assembly were introduced as a team of previously unseen superheroes brought together under the auspices of the ominous Echidna corporation. As Jessica Drew has discovered, Echidna isn’t just a tech giant turned corporate slumlord, but rather a front for Hydra itself.

Jessica Drew moved to the West Coast in the hopes of catching up with her son, Gerry Drew, who in the span of only a few short months went from being a loving toddler to a full-grown nightmare. When Spider-Woman was removed from existence entirely due to the reality-altering machinations of the villainous Shathra, Hydra noticed that the superpowered tyke was entirely unattended. With that, they kidnapped Gerry and subjected him to similar procedures Jessica underwent during her youth, accelerating his growth and imbuing him with greater powers than ever before.
