One of the most iconic What If…? comic book stories of all-time was the 1991 story by Roy Thomas, Randy and Jean-Marc Lofficier, and Tom Morgan that saw Wolverine become the Lord of the Vampires. In this CBR exclusive preview of next week’s Wolverine: Blood Hunt #4, we see that that might be happening in the regular Marvel continuity, as well!

Wolverine: Blood Hunt #4 is produced by writer Tom Waltz, artist Juan José Ryp, colorist Guru-ex, and letterer Joe Caramagna (with a gorgeously dark cover by Ben Harvey), and it features Wolverine’s mission against a rogue faction of vampires that involves his old friend and mercenary teammate, Maverick, who has become a vampire under the thrall of a powerful vampire named Alyssa, and she wants Wolverine to be her new vampire king, with the chance to take over all vampires on Earth once the dust of Blood Hunt has been settled.

Wolverine had been working with his old ally, Nightguard (a vampire hunter who had been transformed into a vampire herself during Wolverine’s previous ongoing series, but Wolverine had worked with Forge to give her the ability to control her change better than other vampires, along with a special suit designed to block out the harmful effects of sunlight) to break into the base of this rogue faction of vampires, led by Wolverine’s old friend, Maverick, but secretly led by Alyssa, a vampire who sought to become the queen of the vampires.

Nightguard and Wolverine damaged him enough to weaken his healing powers, so that Nightguard was able to turn him into a vampire temporarily. However, while in this state, Alyssa was able to put him under her thrall, which is bad news for Maverick.

In the preview pages, Maverick is thrilled to see that his old buddy might be on the same vampire team as him, but Maverick doesn’t realize that Alyssa, having Wolverine under control, has been communicating with Wolverine telepathically, and she then reveals that the “test” that she and Maverick put Wolverine through was not over, and it was a test for MAVERICK, as well, to see who will be her king!

Wolverine, trapped in a vampiric blood lust, attacks Maverick, while meanwhile, we see Nightguard explore the enemy base, and look for answers. What she will find will be revealed next week in Wolverine: Blood Hunt #4!
