The following contains major spoilers for The Ultimates #2, on sale July 10 from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s new Ultimates are going to war, and it could be the end of their own country if they win it.

The Ultimates #2 opens to the sight of dozens of civilians and various security standing outside the iron gates of the White House. Soon enough, the idyllic scene is interrupted by an explosion entrance on the part of Captain America, the Wasp, and Giant Man, all of whom have been led into battle by none other than Iron Lad. As the heroes push forward, all that Captain America can think about is saving the country he once loved, or whatever version of it will be left standing once the team has completed their mission.

The current Ultimates team was put together by Tony Stark and Reed Richards, better known as Doom in their world. Shortly after the Maker’s defeat at the hands of Howard Stark and the enigmatic Ultimate iteration of Kang the Conqueror, Tony and Reed set about amassing as many genuine heroes as they could in a bid to stand against the twisted world leaders put into positions of power by the villain who reshaped their world in his own image.

The current Ultimate Universe, also known as the reality of Earth-6160, first appeared in the pages of 2023’s Ultimate Invasion #1 by Jonathan Hickman, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie and Alex Sinclair. This reality was remarkably similar to the Maker’s own, that of the original Ultimate Universe, or Earth-1610. Using his knowledge of history, the Maker prevented the rise of most of this world’s heroes, all while manipulating others into becoming pawns in his scheme for absolute dominance.
